Working with Victims and Survivors of CSAM for Law Enforcement

This training series educates law enforcement on how to best support victims and survivors of CSAM. NCMEC developed this training series in collaboration with adult survivors, law enforcement, caregivers, attorneys, forensic interviewers, and many others in this field.

Topics covered in this series include:

• Unique challenges that exist for survivors of CSAM.

• Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and how it's different from Child Sexual Abuse (CSA).

• Importance of respecting survivors’ choice, consent, and control.

• Making first contact with the victim and/or their family and how to navigate interest from the media.

• Best practices for establishing, maintaining, and ending long-term communication with survivors of CSAM.

• NCMEC's resources that best support survivors of CSAM, especially regarding their safety, security, and privacy.

• Benefits of working with other child-serving professionals as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to best support survivors of CSAM.

• Advantage of working with a trained forensic interviewer.

• Best practices for self-care concerning instances of CSAM for both survivors, their families, and law enforcement.
